Thirteenth Annual Conference Tradition and Innovation in Translation Studies Research
On 4th and 5th February 2025, the thirteenth international scientific conference for PhD students and young researchers Tradition and Innovation in Translation Studies Research XIII took place. The thirteenth edition was subtitled Expanding Horizons in Translation Studies: Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives, with an emphasis on the interconnectedness of disciplines that can cooperate more closely thanks to translation studies. The conference was supported by the project VEGA 2/0092/23 Translation and Translating as a Part of the Slovak Cultural Space History and Present. Transformations of Form, Status and Functions: Texts, Personages, Institutions.
The conference was once again held online with the aim of attracting researchers from different corners of the world. Speakers from various European countries were present, as well as participants from Australia or China.
The conference was opened by the Vice-Dean for International Relations and Development PhDr. Daša Nováčiková, PhD. and the Head of the Department of Translation Studies doc. Mgr. Soňa Hodáková, PhD. The organizing team (consisting of PhD students Mgr. Andrej Birčák, Mgr. Lenka Žitňanská, Mgr. Romana Chantal Čuláková and Mgr. Lívia Kodajová) as well as the keynote speakers were introduced by one of the organizers Mgr. Lenka Žitňanská.
Two keynote speakers and the interconnection of translation studies with other fields
The first keynote speaker was professor Ramunė Kasperė from Lithuania with a presentation on artificial intelligence in translation studies, in which she explained the interdisciplinary nature of this phenomenon. The second keynote speaker, professor Adriano Ferraresi from Italy, presented a ground-breaking way of translating newspaper reports using corpora.
The conference was divided into individual sections, which dealt with different subfields of translation studies. The audience could listen to insightful presentations on audiovisual translation, accessibility, didactics, criticism and history of translation, interpreting, technologies, sociology of translation or other specific discourses in translatology.
On behalf of the organizers, Mgr. Andrej Birčák concluded that during two inspiring days the participants and the audience had the opportunity to gain new insights and to be inspired by thought-provoking research from all over the world. The whole conference was simultaneously interpreted by students of the Department of Translation Studies.
We believe that the interdisciplinary approach of this year’s conference broadened the horizons of all participants and, given the thematic diversity, everyone found something that interested them.
