GENERAL INFORMATION
Applicants fill out their applications in paper (30 €) or digital form (25 €) and submit it to FA CPU in Nitra by the set date.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE

All applicants for a full-time Bachelor’s study programme: Translation and Interpreting (in language combinations with: English, German, Russian, Spanish, and Slovak) will be chosen up to the number set by the quotas for a particular study programme based on the results of their study from the secondary school in the given subjects (English, German, Russian, Spanish, and Slovak).

Expected level of the foreign language is B2.

Given that Slovak language is the working language for translation and interpreting training in case of all language combinations, expected language level of Slovak is level B2.

MASTER’S DEGREE

After successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting (or a related field of study in a given language combination), all applicants for a full-time Master’s study programme in Translation and Interpreting (in language combinations with: English, German, Russian, Spanish, and Slovak) up to the number set by the quotas for a particular study programme will be accepted.

Expected level of the foreign language is C1.

Given that Slovak language is the working language for translation and interpreting training in case of all language combinations, expected language level of Slovak is level C1.

BACHELOR’S DEGREE

Graduate’s profile

Graduates of this study program (level 1) will acquire basic theoretical and methodological knowledge in the field of translation studies and in the history, development and methods of translation and interpreting. They will study the languages chosen to a high level in terms of contrastive grammar, lexicology and stylistics. They will learn the history, geography and culture of the particular countries to the extent necessary for translation and interpreting, as well as the literature written in their languages. They will also learn the basic strategies and methods in order to implement inter-lingual transfer and basic knowledge of specific language in the area of law, economics and European institutions.

Employment possibilities

A graduate may find work:

• as a translator of texts for specific purposes,
• as an interpreter in a specialised field,
• as a language and intercultural mediator,
• as a communication mediator in business,
• as a communication mediator in state administration,
• in international institutions,
• as an interpreter – guide for tourists.

MASTER’S DEGREE

Graduate profile

Graduates from this study programme (level 2) will acquire wide theoretical knowledge about translation and interpreting, will be able to compare their language, culture and social systems and will be able to communicate in all language styles, e.g. artistic, technical, journalistic, and advertising, in both written and oral form on an adequate level. Graduates will master all the necessary techniques, skills, habits and strategies in order to translate texts for specific purposes and literary texts, and acquire skills in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. They will achieve a high level of language proficiency in both, mother tongue and the foreign language as well as in their translation and interpreting competencies. They will also become aware of the legal, economic and practical aspects of the work of translators and interpreters. They will acquire a profound knowledge of foreign language and literature extending the field of their potential employment.

Employment possibilities

A graduate may find work:

• as a translator or interpreter of at least one foreign language,
• as an advisor in non-governmental organisations and in non-profit sector,
• as a diplomat,
• in cultural and educational organisations,
• as an editor,
• or can carry out research in translation studies.

DOCTORAL DEGREE

Profile

Graduates from this programme will become experts in translation and interpreting studies. They will acquire knowledge about particular research methods in the area of translation and interpreting. They will be able to propose their own solutions in the area of translation studies; they will learn the principles of research and how to formulate research questions and will be able to appreciate the ethical and social aspects of research. They will also be able to present the results of their own research and contribute to the development of this field of study in relation to real practice.

Employment possibility

Graduates from this study programme (level 3) may find work in research, educational and academic institutions focusing on translation studies or other related fields of interest (Slovak and foreign universities and Institutes of the Academy of Sciences).
