Profil:

Associate professor Andrej Zahorák is the Secretary of the Department of Translation Studies and teaches bachelor’s degree classes. He graduated from the Faculty of Arts at Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra in the field of Translation Studies with a specialisation on German and Russian Language and Culture, and he obtained a doctoral degree as well as his habilitation from the same institution.
He participated in a specialised course on translating literary fiction in the Translation House Looren in Switzerland in 2021, and was a visiting scholar at the Innsbruck Translation Centre in 2022 and 2024.
His research interests focus on the intercultural aspects of translation with an emphasis on precedentness and on literary and audiovisual translation, in particular dubbing and subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. He teaches translation and interpreting in Russian and German as well as translation methodology. He is the author of a monograph titled Intercultural Aspect in Translation and Reception of Precedent Phenomena (Peter Lang, 2019), for which he was awarded the Dean’s Prize for outstanding academic publication in the year 2019. He is also the author of a monograph titled Precedentné fenomény ako nástroj v interpretácii prekladového umeleckého textu [Precedent Phenomena as a Tool in Interpreting Translated Literary Texts] and the co-author of Audiovizuálny preklad a nepočujúci divák: problematika titulkovania pre nepočujúcich [Audiovisual Translation and the Deaf Audience: Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing] (2016).
As a literary translator, he frequently collaborates with a number of Slovak publishing houses (Tatran, Ikar, Absynt) and to date published more than 12 literary translations. He regularly presents his research in Slovak and international conferences and other events (Czechia, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Belarus, Russia, Kazachstan). He is the principal investigator for the KEGA project Precedentness as a Tool in Testing and Improving the Intercultural Competence of Students of Translation Studies and a team member on a number of other national and international projects (APVV, VEGA, Aktion Österreich – Slowakei).
