Translating in the European Comission: Machine Translation, NLP, and Artificial Intelligence

On 19 March 2024, the Department of Translation Studies held a workshop dedicated to translation for the European Union, focusing mainly on machine translation (e-translation) and other tools of the European Commission. The workshop was led by Mrs. Barbora Tricoire from the European Commission’s Representation in Slovakia, who introduced the students to the following EU translation aspects: how translation services work within the European Union, what specifics of institutional texts to look out for, and also what tools EU translators use in their work.

After registering and gaining access to e-translation (the European Commission’s machine translation service), the students had the opportunity to post-edit an AI-translated text and assess its overall adequacy, as well as to point out any shortcomings that required correction.

Finally, Mrs. Tricoire informed the students about the wide range of student traineeships in the European institutions and we believe that she encouraged several of them to take part in such a traineeship, which is an excellent stepping stone to an EU translator career.
